Sports and Social Media – Part 2

MP&F Staff Blog, Insights

In our sports and social media blog series, which Sandy Weaver kicked off a couple of weeks ago (here), Senior Account Executive Brandon Barca says preparation will help you “win the moment.” As did Weaver, Barca worked in sports prior to joining MP&F. He spent 18 years in college sports marketing and communications, most recently as a digital and social media strategist for the University of Oregon in the Pac-12 and before that at Vanderbilt University. Barca created nationally recognized all-access videos documenting Vanderbilt’s football and baseball programs, and developed innovative ways to unveil Oregon’s trend-setting uniforms to a global …

Juneteenth/Freedom Day

MP&F Staff Blog, Insights

One of our newest staff associates Celeste Malone wrote the following post in celebration of Juneteenth, an American holiday on June 19 that commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas and is widely viewed as the end of slavery in the United States. MP&F’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which Celeste is a member of, provides regular programming for the office to create a more open and self-aware environment. The content of the post was part of a presentation Celeste and fellow staff associate Ira Hughes gave during a recent staffwide meeting. On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived …

The Nashville sports scene has been buzzing this spring. From hosting the 2019 NFL Draft in front of a record 600,000 fans and the NHL’s Nashville Predators’ playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to welcoming a former NBA star player as the new head men’s basketball coach at Vanderbilt University, big sports moments are happening in Nashville. For sports programs, there is a challenge in taking these memorable moments and turning them into social media victories. Senior account executives Sandy Weaver and Brandon Barca each spent more than a decade specializing in sports marketing and communications before joining the MP&F …

Mentorship and Me

MP&F Staff Blog, Inspiration

Caylan Hays is one of MP&F’s newest staff associates. Here’s her personal take on mentorship and why it is both meaningful and important. I’ve heard it said before that we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. To me, that ideal captures the essence of mentorship and what might motivate someone to act as a mentor. It’s a great privilege to have been offered wisdom and guidance from people I admire, both personally and professionally. Mentorship doesn’t always come with the title, and sometimes you don’t know you’ve had a mentor …

Making a Career Shift? Adapt, Learn, Grow and Continue To Hone Skills

Alex Perez Blog

I had a lot of self-doubts when I chose to leave my job in Washington at the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, move to Nashville and change careers. Every negative scenario regarding this decision ran through my mind. After all, transition can be scary. I had spent over three years working in a fast-paced, exciting city that pushed me to be my best in all aspects of my career. Did I really want to start over in a new city and in a completely new industry? I had never worked in PR; what if I have no …

Dressing for the Job

MP&F Staff Blog, Inspiration

As a young professional, I often ask myself, “Is this acceptable?” Adapting to working in a professional environment can be a challenge in the beginning of a career. As times have changed, so has the dress code. Over time, we have seen a shift in the culture and fashion in the workplace. What was once frowned upon as too casual has become more acceptable. However, even with these changes, companies, like MP&F, still expect employees to look professional. Why is it important to dress nicely? Do not underestimate the importance of first impressions! Studies show that 55 percent of first …

Five Things We Look for When Hiring an Intern

Eric Tieles Blog, Insights

It’s no secret that the right internship can be tremendously helpful for young people’s careers. Benefits of an internship can include experience, networking opportunities, class credit (if a school recognizes it) and a paycheck (assuming it’s a paid internship … for the record, MP&F’s interns are paid). Given all of these positives, it isn’t surprising that landing an internship becomes more competitive each year. While I make no claims to represent the thinking of all hiring managers, future intern candidates could benefit by paying attention to the following five things: 1.) Resume Quality and Length. There are plenty of resources …
