Roger Shirley

Roger Shirley, a veteran journalist who joined MP&F Strategic Communications in 1996, is in charge of quality control for the firm’s writing, serving as a frontline copy editor, writing coach and message development strategist. In addition, Roger handles writing and media relations for special projects and serves as the firm’s point person for public opinion and market surveys. He has written, coordinated and analyzed more than 50 local, regional and statewide surveys for clients ranging from hospitals, banks and chambers of commerce to grassroots organizations and business coalitions.

Prior to joining MP&F, Roger was editor of the Nashville Business Journal, a weekly business publication. He began his journalism career as a reporter at the Bristol (Va.-Tenn.) Herald Courier, where he later served as news editor and political writer. In 1982, he went to work as a reporter and copy editor for the Nashville Banner and later was an assistant city editor. Before moving to Nashville, Roger served as press secretary for the successful campaign of former U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher in Virginia’s 9th District.

In 1996, Roger was media coordinator for the Yes for Nashville referendum campaign, which succeeded in gaining approval for construction of the city’s NFL stadium and the relocation of the Titans franchise from Houston.

A native of Fort Payne, Ala., Roger graduated in 1977 from Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., where he received an interdisciplinary degree in communications, political science and English.
